Hitler and the Rise of the Nazi Party in Pictures – A Photo Book – First Published in 1933 as ‘Kampf Um’s Dritte Reich – Eine Hist $28.25 This photo book with about 270 pictures was published in 1933 as a propaganda work to give the general public an insight into Adolf Hitler’s life from 1914 to 1933. It covers four periods of Hitler’s life: the artist, the soldier, the politician and the statesman. In 1914, when WW1 broke out, Hitler was living as an artist in Munich. He became a soldier in a Bavarian regiment and spent the next four years in the trenches. Returning to Munich after the war he joined in 1919 a small nationalist party. He relaunched it as the Nazi Party and became a full time politician. In 1923, with the so-called Beer Hall Putsch, Hitler tried in vain to overthrow the Bavarian Government. After a year in prison, in 1925 he reformed the party, making it more electable and paving his way to become Chancellor in 1933. The reprint of this rare book will be welcomed by scholars of the period as an indispensable primary source offering a valuable perspective on the formation and development of Nazi ideology. |

Peoples Hist of Th -Op/074 $9.41 THE WAR IN INDOCHINA AS SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF THOSE FIGHTING ON BOTH SIDES In an exciting new installment of The New Press’s People’s History Series, Jonathan Neale gives us an incisive account of the war America lost, from the perspective of those who opposed it on both sides of the battlefront as well as on the home front. The protagonists in Neale’s history of the "American War" (as the Vietnamese refer to it) are common people struggling to shape the outcome of events unfolding on an international stage–American foot soldiers who increasingly oppose American military policy on the ground in Vietnam, local Vietnamese activists and guerrillas fighting to build a just society, and the American civilians who mobilized to bring the war to a halt. Neale provides a sober account of the evolving priorities of the Vietnamese and American elites, and of the many ways that their strategic objectives were shaped, reshaped, and driven off-course by upsurges from below. His narrative includes vivid, first-person commentary from the ordinary men and women whose collective actions resulted in the defeat of the world’s most powerful military machine. |

Towards Intellectual Hist of Ukraine $38.47 Together with a long introductory essay, the editors of this volume have provided a collection of major documents dating from 1710 to 1995. The texts, many of them translated for the first time and some perhaps unfamiliar to Ukrainian readers, explore issues that intellectual history has traditionally set out to examine and explain. They touch on religious, philosophical, aesthetic, ethical, sociological, historical, and political ideas, and thereby illuminate significant attitudes, values, ideological commitments, and systems of thought that have crystallized at central moments in the development of Ukraine. Leading Ukrainian writers, scholars, intellectuals, political figures, and statesman present their views on Ukrainian history, especially its relation to Russia, but also discuss their society, literature, and culture, as well as the slow but dramatic formation and growth of national identity. These texts best reflect the transformation of Ukraine, and the obstacles to such a transformation, into a modern nation, which in 1991 declared its independence. They serve, therefore, as a guide to a complex period of hundreds of years, which, up to now, was too often considered only as a part of Russian history. In this context, the anthology contributes to an understanding of the past few centuries from a post-colonial perspective. |
