What happens if you accidentally connect the battery cables backwards on a car battery?

my car was dead. I went to a warehouse Scrap for a used battery because im thinking bout getting a new car and did not want to put much into it. the junkyard gave me the bad battery. I know it has not yet til i was putting on the second cable and there was a spark. now drive over or even out of the park habit. even when you have the key. What did I do???
