Round Hay
Why are some bales of hay and other rectangles and back?
We recently traveled through South Dakota and has several differences in the way hay was baled and wondered what are the benefits of each type were. Besides the large round bales and rectangular, were also some farms that had plateau haystacks. Does anyone educate us, are city people – we want to know everything you need to know about hay bales, but were afraid to ask. Oh, also wonders why there is packed with … wire or rope is heavy … how long without rotting and if the round can be undone if push or if you have to use the equipment to do so. I'm really enjoying reading these responses, I thank all who offered their expertise.
Usually, when there are grown for market, is packed in rectangular bales for transport purposes, such as straw. You see there are trucks (trucks and trailers) along roads loaded with hay bales. I live in the Pacific Northwest (USA) and have never been dragged round bales, only seen in areas where they are cultivated and nurtured. In of the 50, my stepfather drove trucks hay from eastern Washington to California dairy farms, alfalfa hay was always there. Now I live in western Washington, where most of the grass hay. I've only seen round bales hay, so I'm curious as to whether alfalfa is always "round-packed" or alfalfa commercially cultivated in western Washington and Oregon (only hay I've seen this side of the falls). Now they also have huge rectangular bales! Thanks for the question that brought a lot of good memories. I grew up on a farm in eastern Washington, and my grandfather grew in both grain (oats, barley and wheat, which also meant straw) and alfalfa. The few times I was allowed to cool to follow the hay baler to a toddler and fascinating to watch the "blueprint" is going in one end and goes a bullet at the other end. Watching the fox was even more "magic" because the stems of cereals including going to cut the tape and go through a grain hopper and straw of the other.
